This should be possible now as a directory plugin. This will use the creation/modification date on the files to determine the age and possibly touch the dates when the file is detected. Periodic scans will take place to determine ages and and a new event called “Expired” will be created when old files are detected.

  2. Web View Plugin

A plugin that allows Directory Monitor to publish events over HTTP or Web Sockets so that you can monitor activity over the internet.

Using a technology such as SignalR (http://signalr.net/), real-time events from Directory Monitor could easily be consumed from a web page over the internet.

You would configure an HTTP end-point that SignalR clients could connect to and listen for events on their configured directories. The end-point provided could be a completely custom site. An example monitoring page will be provided as well.

  3. FTP Plugin

A simple FTP uploader plugin that will attach and and push new/changed files to an FTP server.

Still thinking about what should happen to deleted files, should they also be removed on the FTP server? The plugin will have similar functionality to the emailer with regard to options. Need to be careful about performance when there is a high volume of events. Errors can easily occur as well if files go missing during uploads or connectivity becomes a problem.

  4. Monitor directory only during specific times

Add an option to allow monitoring a directory only during specific times during the day (such as business hours). Outside of the configured range the monitor will be disabled and no events will be logged or acted upon.

The range should cater for days of the week and times during that day. Would having a month option be useful (to monitor only in January for example)?

  5. RSS Feed Plugin

A plugin to expose Directory Monitor events through an RSS feed.

This could be very useful for admins running the application as a service to be constantly notified over the web of what is happening on the servers.

The event data would be exposed just as it does through the textual or grid log views on the UI. You would configure an end-point that Directory Monitor would feed information to in ATOM or RSS2 XML.

  6. Linux support using Mono

When v2 of Directory Monitor started being developed, I kept Mono (http://www.mono-project.com/) in mind to also support Linux and had the application running using Mono in Ubuntu.

I have not been actively testing Directory Monitor in Linux although it is entirely possible to have a functional build that will provide the same features on a Linux distribution running Mono.

If there is enough interest in this (votes) then I will provide an official build and fully supported version to the public.

  7. Event Log Writer Plugin

A plugin that writes Directory Monitor events to the Windows Event Log.

This could write to the application event log (errors are already written there) or to it's own custom event log for monitoring with administrative tools like SCOM.

  8. Reporting Plugin

Generate PDF and/or Excel reports of directory activity. The reports can include statistics, summaries, charts and graphs to display overall activity for each directory as well as all directories combined.

This report could be generated on a daily basis and coupled with the Emailer plugin to send a scheduled update. Reports could also be generated manually which would mean having to archive all event data so that is can be retrieved long after being cleared in the UI.

  10. Check file type changes to help stop Ramsonware

    Trace file type change.
    This would help with Ramsonware.
They change the file type from eg. Excel file type to something else due to encryption and they do it on several files within a short period of time.

  12. Ability to manage multiple installs in one location (web interface)

For example, on install you are prompted to install either the service or the management console/web interface, or both. The service could then be installed on a number of additional machines, and managed centrally via the console/web interface.

This would be ideal for enterprise users.

  15. Zero notification (silent) directory option

The ability to setup a directory that does not cause any user notification such as balloons, tray icon flashing or even the tray icon changes. Events created will be completely silent but still logged to the Text and Grid logs and any automation steps will also be run, there will just be no indication to the user that anything has happened.

This can be useful for ignoring events in directories you knowingly are making changes to and want to log the changes, but not be concerned with a notification. More important directories can notify you in some way so that…

  16. Additional action options within the application

Would be great if the software would allow copy/move/delete file actions as an event instead of having to create/maintain a .bat file to execute upon trigger.

  17. Monitor Number of files in folder

Be able to set a file number monitor for a folder.
And alert when number of files are above or below that.

E.g. If number of files exceeds 500 in a folder send alert.
If number of files are below 17 in a folder send alert.

  18. Checksum or hash sum on files

Add an option to collect a checksum on files (using MD5 or some other algorithm) if Directory Monitor detects a file change. This would allow for easier and more accurate tracking of files moving (from one folder to another), being edited, and renamed.
